Welsh Charities Week: Bute Energy’s Charity Partnerships

Welsh Charities Week is an opportunity to recognise the organisations that support people and communities across Wales and the partnerships that help make that work possible. 

Community investment is a core part of how we operate as an onshore renewable energy developer in Wales. This year, as the week’s theme “Play your part, change lives” encourages reflection and action, we are looking back at our two charity partnerships that conclude in 2026: our work with The DPJ Foundation and St David’s Hospice.

These three-year partnerships demonstrate how long-term, values-led collaboration can deliver meaningful social impact, and we’re proud to have raised over £25,000 so far with more activities to come before our partnerships draw to a close

Which charity partnerships does Bute Energy support? 

In 2023, our staff voted for two Welsh charities they wanted to support for three years. After learning much about different organisations, the team decided to partner with with charities that address critical but often under-represented needs in Wales, particularly around wellbeing, care and support. 

Rather than short-term sponsorships, these partnerships were designed to provide practical, flexible support that allowed charities to focus on delivering frontline services where they are needed most. 

The DPJ Foundation

 The DPJ Foundation provides confidential mental health support to farmers and people living in rural Wales – communities that can face isolation, stigma and limited access to services. 

 Through our partnership, we helped support the Foundation’s work to: 

  • Improve access to confidential mental health services
  • Raise awareness of mental wellbeing in rural and farming communities 
  • Encourage earlier conversations and help-seeking behaviour 

 Mental health support in rural Wales saves lives. This partnership reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are, in ways that feel trusted, local and accessible. 

St David’s Hospice Care

St David’s Hospice Care delivers specialist palliative and end-of-life care to people with life-limiting illness, as well as vital support for families and loved ones. 

Our partnership helped St David’s Hospice to: 

  • Continue delivering high-quality, compassionate care
  • Support patients and families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives 
  • Sustain services that rely heavily on charitable funding 

Hospice care plays a crucial role in Wales’s health and care system, ensuring dignity, comfort and humanity when it matters most. 

How did the business fundraise? 

From bake sales to spinathons, mountain tops to Pat Sharp – over the past three years, we have put on all kinds of events to raise money for our partners. 

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported our fundraising efforts over the past 3 years and continue to do so.  For staff, the events have been an opportunity to pull together and connect outside of the work environment. I am very passionate about charities and I think it showed with our cake sale.  People commented that it was the largest cake sale people had seen!  Apparently, staff were too scared to say no to me! For external partners, our events seem to be a highlight of the year – especially our quiz nights and touch rugby tournament!  A bit of friendly competition and networking without the usual work talk.

I want to continue organising these events, as it not only raises money for charities and their vital services, it brings people together and I think we need more of that in the world we live in.  You never know when you will need a charity’s support and I think we all have a responsibility to ensure their survival.”

What happens when the partnerships come to an end? 

While these partnerships conclude in 2026, their impact will continue, through stronger organisations, supported individuals and lessons that will inform our future work. 

This Welsh Charities Week, we want to say diolch yn fawr to the DPJ Foundation and St David’s Hospice for the vital role they play across Wales.   When organisations play their part, lives really can change.
