Bute Energy Bursaries Fuel Green Energy Masters Students

Bute Energy is proud to support two aspiring planners with bursaries to help shape a more sustainable future for Wales.

As part of our commitment to building skills for a net zero future, we’ve awarded bursaries to two master’s students at Cardiff University’s School of Geography and Planning. The support will help students Ella Davies and Cerys Williams complete their MSc in Spatial Planning and Development – a course that’s preparing the next generation to lead in renewable energy planning and sustainable placemaking.

Ella Davies – Spatial Planning and Development student

“My passion for planning stems from a strong enthusiasm for design and the built environment. I am particularly drawn to aspects such as sustainable infrastructure, urban greening, and eco-friendly design, as well as creating more resilient and inclusive spaces. I believe that thoughtful planning has the power to enhance communities, improve quality of life, and address pressing environmental challenges.

“This course has given me a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of planning, from law and policy to urban design, transport, and real estate. I’ve learnt a lot about the complexities of creating sustainable, functional spaces. I’ve also learnt the importance of community engagement in the planning process. When people are involved in decision-making, it leads to spaces that are more resilient, fair, and better meet the needs of those who live and work there. This focus on inclusivity has made me even more passionate about creating spaces that balance social, economic, and environmental needs.

Nia Williams – Spatial Planning and Development Student

After graduating, I spent time traveling across Australia and Asia, where I saw first hand how different cultures and environments shape urban development. This experience deepened my interest in the complex relationship between people, the environment, and the role of planning in fostering sustainable communities.  Studying Spatial Planning and Development has given me invaluable insights into urban and rural development, policymaking, and the importance of community engagement and community-led development.

“My goal is to continue developing my expertise in planning, particularly in creating sustainable, resilient communities that balance environmental responsibility with meaningful community involvement. Supporting this, my dissertation focuses on wind farm development, exploring different energy pathways to support the transition to renewable energy. As my next step, I aim to achieve RTPI accreditation, further strengthening my professional skills and enabling me to contribute to projects that support a greener, more sustainable future.

“I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to applying what I learn in the course to make a positive, meaningful impact on communities and the environment.”

These planning bursaries at Cardiff are part of Bute Energy’s Net Zero Skills Strategy – our pledge to grow the pipeline of skilled professionals needed to accelerate green energy projects in Wales.
