Community event marks start of construction at Twyn Hywel Energy Park in Caerphilly

Today [26 June 2026] we welcomed local residents, partners and stakeholders to a community event at Nelson RFC to mark the start of construction at Twyn Hywel Energy Park.

The event brought together people from Nelson, Caerphilly, Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach and surrounding areas to hear directly from us about what construction will involve, what happens next, and how local communities will benefit.

Why did we hold this event?

We held this event to mark the start of construction and to make sure local people had the opportunity to:

  • Understand what’s happening on site
  • Ask questions about construction and potential impacts
  • Find out how the project will benefit the community
  • Share their views directly with our team

Delivery Project Manager – Gareth Edwards, and Director of Community Investment and Communications – Catryn Newton, hosted the event.

 

What did people hear at the event?

We shared clear, practical information about what happens next.

This included:

  • The construction timeline and key stages
  • What to expect from on-site activity in the coming months
  • How works will be managed as construction progresses

We focused on providing straightforward updates so people know what to expect as activity increases on site.

Who else was at the event?

The supplier responsible for the civil engineering contract on the Twyn Hywel Energy Park site – Knights Brown – were also with us to answer questions from the public and set up a stand to chat to residents throughout the afternoon.

We were privileged to be joined by Llancaeach Junior School choir who celebrated the occasion with a fantastic medley of songs.  A big thank you to Mrs McCarthy and Mr Colin.

How will the project benefit local communities?

We also shared details of how local communities will benefit from the project.

This includes a Community Benefit Fund designed to support local priorities:

  • Up to £703,500 every year once the project is operational
  • £140,000 being released early during construction
  • Funding for local organisations, charities and community projects

Keeping communities informed as construction progresses

Starting construction is a significant milestone, but it is just the beginning of ongoing engagement.

We will continue to:

  • Share regular updates on progress
  • Provide clear information about upcoming activity
  • Create opportunities for people to stay involved

Catryn Newton, our Community Investment and Communications Director, said:

The event at Nelson RFC gave us the chance to share what happens next, but just as importantly to listen, answer questions and continue building strong relationships.

Twyn Hywel Energy Park is a new onshore wind energy project being built on the border of Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

  • 92.4MW of renewable energy capacity
  • Enough to power around 81,000 homes
