8 Key Renewable Energy Developments in Wales and the UK during 2024, according to Wyn Prichard.

As the year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past 12 months and the progress made in the renewable energy sector across Wales and the UK. While 2024 presented its challenges, it also laid a strong foundation for future growth in sustainable energy. 

For me personally, 2024 was supposed to be a year of winding down into partial retirement after over 30 years in skills and business support. I even had hopes of lowering my golf handicap! However, the pace of developments in the renewable energy space pulled me back in, and I couldn’t be more honoured to be the guest blogger for Bute Energy this December.

In this post, I’m excited to share the 8 most significant renewable energy developments which happened in Wales and across the UK in 2024.

2. Welsh Government Announces Planning Reforms

In 2024, Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning at Welsh Government, introduced critical reforms to the planning system to streamline the approval process for renewable energy projects. A key change is delegating the decision-making for projects with capacities up to 50MW to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW). This move is expected to reduce planning approval timelines by 12 weeks, further accelerating Wales’ journey toward a renewable future. 

4. Launch of the Net Zero Skills Strategy

I was thrilled to see Bute Energy take a leading role in addressing the green skills gap by launching the Net Zero Skills Strategy in 2024. This strategy focuses on creating a talent pipeline for the renewable energy industry, emphasizing STEM education for young women and paid internships. It’s a vital step toward strengthening the supply chain and preparing the workforce for the demands of a greener future. 

6. Offshore and Onshore Wind Economic Opportunities

Offshore wind, particularly floating wind initiatives in the Celtic Sea, is poised to further boost Wales’ renewable energy capacity. Onshore wind projects also continued to provide significant economic opportunities, supporting local supply chains and creating skilled jobs in construction and maintenance. Bute Energy remains at the forefront of these developments, contributing to Wales’ ambitious goal of generating 100% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2035.
